Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang is presently an Assistant Professor of English/Literature at Hillyer College, University of Hartford, West Hartford, and an Associate to the UNESCO Chair and Institute for comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut.
Joyce has been active in using various artistic media as educational tools for twenty years and counting. She is an actress par excellance; a founding member of the Cameroon Flame Players, and a memorable member of the Yaounde University Theater. Her acting career received a boost in 1987 when she attended an international workshop on theater in Detroit, Michigan where she received training from movie/theater icons including Ossie Davies.
While Joyce still enjoys acting every now and then, she has transferred some of that passion into writing scripts and shooting videos and films promoting human rights. After co- founding Akobat Global Media in Cameroon in 2001, she has now founded EduART INC, a US registered non profit organization.
After graduating with a B.A. from the University of Yaounde, Joyce continued to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth , Great Britain, where she earned a Masters degree in Library and information science. She then earned another Masters in Education/English (Dipes II) from Ecole Normale Superieur, Univ. of Yaounde I. Joyce then moved on to earn an M.Phil and Ph.D in English from the City University of New York.
Dr. Joyce Ashuntantang is versatile. She is an engaging speaker, a mentor to young people, a creative writer and an effective community resource person. Her recent activities include giving talks in various U.S. universities on the her practice of scripting and shooting videos for awareness, an interview on the BBC program “Every Woman” produced by Catherine Addis from London and organizing the EduArt Awards for Anglophone Cameroon literature (see www.eduartawards.com). She is also a regular presenter at the UNESCO Intergenerational Conference on Human Rights for young leaders from around the globe which takes place annually in Storrs, Connecticut.
Dr.Joyce Ashuntantang is the author of Landscaping Postcoloniality: The Dissemination of Cameroon Anglophone Litearure and she also co-edited with Dibussi Tande Their Campaign Party Will End: Poems in Honor Of Bate Besong. Her awards include The Spirit of Detroit Award from the Mayor of Detroit, 1987, Cameroon Cultural Festival Awards 1989 and 1994, Outstanding Women in Action Award, Cameroon, 2002. She has two kids, David Ako Abunaw III and George Tanjong Abunaw.
